You know that wedding tradition where you freeze a portion of your wedding cake to enjoy on your first anniversary? Well, Beenie‘s Ice Cream in Morristown has mixed up a delicious twist for that tradition. They’ll turn your leftover wedding cake into 18 pints of custom ice cream—a one-of-a-kind sweet to treat yourself to over several weeks. (That’s the smallest batch that their ice cream maker can produce.) Want to share your custom treat? Couples also gift the pints to their wedding party and family members. It’s a sweet way to relive your wedding day!
The idea started when Beenie’s owners Tony and Andrea Franco got married in 2019 at the Olde Mill Inn in Basking Ridge. They took their wedding carrot cake back to the shop, which opened in 2017, and turned it into carrot cake ice cream.
“We loved it so much that we’ve continued the tradition ourselves, reordering the same wedding cake every year on our anniversary and recreating it as an ice cream flavor at the shop for our customers,” says Tony. “A few years later, Andrea suggested offering this as a service for other newlyweds, and it naturally grew from there.”
To create your own custom wedding pints, place your order through the Beenie’s website or send a DM to Beenie’s on Instagram. Each order is made as a small batch using the Beenie’s signature scratch-made dairy base. Couples select a base flavor, mix-in and swirl option. (Custom pints can be purchased for any occasion, not just weddings).
“I personally review each order and offer suggestions based on the original cake flavors,” says Tony. “For example, pairing chocolate raspberry cake could work well with a chocolate base, vanilla buttercream swirl, and raspberry jam or fudge ripple.”
Of course, couples can follow those suggestions to closely match their cake, “or take the flavor in a more creative direction using any of the options we offer,” says Tony.
“Some couples also plan the timing around a future anniversary, either by bringing us a cake they had frozen or by reordering a small version of their original cake from the bakery,” he adds.
The experience is priced at $180, plus tax. It’s also a perfect service to gift to a couple at a shower by giving them a gift card to Beenie’s.
As far as timing, couples bring their leftover frozen wedding cake from any bakery to Beenie’s with at least three days’ notice before they want to pick up the finished product. “There’s no rush right after the wedding,” explains Tony. “As long as the cake was frozen, couples can bring it to us weeks or even months later—as long as the bakery okays it.”
The ice cream shop recommends providing at least a four- to six-inch round amount of cake. That way, “there are plenty of cake pieces throughout the ice cream,” says Tony. (Beenie’s never skimps on the chunks!)
Couples who are big ice cream fans will also soon be able to hire the Beenie’s Ice Cream cart as a vendor at their wedding. This whimsical cart will make dessert time on your big day extra fun. Beyond standard flavors, you’ll also have the option to create custom flavors for your guests to enjoy from the cart. Beenie’s fanatics can even hire the Beenie’s mascot to come to their wedding. A perfect match for dog and ice cream lovers!
