Senator Cory Booker Opens Up About Marriage Joy After Wedding

About wife Alexis Lewis he says she, "keeps me anchored in a wonderful way."

It took U.S. Senator Cory Booker a while to find love, but he’s officially been swept off his feet.

“I’m getting to experience a deeper joy than I’ve ever experienced,” Booker told New Jersey Monthly in an interview when asked about his newlywed life in Newark.

He recently said “I do” (twice!) to Alexis Lewis, who works in real estate and is from Washington, D.C.

Booker and Lewis wed in a courthouse in Newark on November 24, 2025, with their parents as witnesses. They celebrated with Italian pastries and vegan chocolate chip cookie dough (Booker is vegan).

A few days later, on Saturday, November 29, they had an intimate ceremony celebrating their marriage in Washington, D.C. with friends and family. It was an interfaith ceremony, with a rabbi and a pastor blessing the couple beneath a huppah and an amazing family tree display with photographs of family members who have passed away. Lewis is Jewish and Booker is Christian.

The couple announced their engagement in September 2025; they met through a mutual friend and have been together since 2024.

In September, Booker wrote on Instagram, “Alexis is one of the greatest blessings of my life.”

Reflecting on his first few months of marriage, Booker says he didn’t expect being married to have such a big impact on him so quickly. “There is something about making this profound commitment before your community and family and then jumping in and what I’ve found after the jump is just this richer and deeper life of joy, commitment and grounding,” he says.

Of Lewis he adds, “[she is] a woman who not only lifts me up but also doesn’t let me take myself too seriously and keeps me anchored in a wonderful way.”

Also new for Booker, in addition to married life, is his book, Stand, which is out March 24 from St. Martin’s Press. In the book, he weaves in personal stories about his parents’ path to living in suburban New Jersey.

Booker says that he and Lewis will live in Newark, adding that he made a decision back in 1998 that he would stay rooted in the city. “The community has done so much for me—so that’s where I am. That’s where I live. I used to have a little crash pad in DC in a basement apartment. Alexis got me out of the basement and wanted me to have more space down there. But we live in Newark,” he says, adding that she posted on her Instagram that she just got her Jersey driver’s license.

He also said he’s been taking her to all his favorite Jersey dining spots, including Hobby’s Deli in Newark and Top’s Diner in East Newark.

“She has fallen in love quickly with all the things that I love about Jersey. She’s devoted to New Jersey!” he says.
