On the great isle of Puerto Rico, opposites attract. Maybe you imagine walking the historic cobblestone streets of some European city, gazing at monuments and taking in history; while your partner envisions lolling days away on the beach with a cocktail in hand. The U.S. territory of Puerto Rico delivers the ideal combination of sights and sandy shores to satisfy both yens.

Caribe Hilton, a mainstay since the 1940s, has been a favorite for celebrity guests (including a vice presidential stay and a presidential visit!). Set amid a breathtaking landscape that spans 17 acres, the hotel has 652 tropical-themed rooms. The honeymoon suite will wow you. The bi-level space has ocean and garden views, a kitchenette and a luxurious walk-in shower. There is a top-notch, on-site spa—how about a couple’s massage in view of the ocean? Rates from $285 per night.

Put on your walking shoes and head into Old San Juan, where historic buildings are painted in rich golds and pinks, and streets have original blue-gray cobblestones. Here, the landmarks speak to the island’s long history. Take the Castillo San Felipe del Morro, probably the most popular tourist attraction. This 16th century fortress was built to protect against sea invasions during the Spanish Empire. The structure still houses military quarters and prison cells, as well as exhibits detailing its history. Nearby, the oldest building in Old San Juan, the governor’s mansion—La Fortaleza—was built in the 1500s. Along with the mansion are UNESCO World Heritage sites, a distinction that gives them official landmark status bestowed on just under 1,100 places the world over. From cathedrals to fountains and statues, PR will not disappoint history buffs. Old San Juan is also home to many art galleries that feature local work, a myriad of shops along its winding streets and awe-inspiring Spanish architecture.

Where to Eat & Drink

A restaurant/bar crawl could take you from a quiet piano bar to rooftop bars and dance clubs. The foodie tour guide, Flavors of San Juan, offers a variety of tour options with stops at restaurants to taste local cuisines while the guide gives an informative sprinkle of cultural tidbits along the way. Sans the food tour, a stop at Scryer distiller is still in order. You can visit the rum-making facilities, as well as taste the array of libations. Back at Caribe Hilton, head down to the hotel’s indoor/outdoor eatery, Caribar (one of the hotel’s nine restaurants), where the iconic piña colada was invented in 1954 —the original recipe is still on the menu.
