Brides planning to wear multiple looks on their big day can get inspired by pop star Demi Lovato’s wedding wardrobe.

For her May 25 wedding in Santa Barbara, California to singer-songwriter Jordan “Jutes” Lutes, Demi stunned in several outfits—including one by New Jersey-based designer Idan Cohen.

For the ceremony, the bride wore a Vivienne Westwood dress with a corset, draped neckline and off-the-shoulder silhouette, according to Vogue.

For the reception, Demi changed into another Vivienne Westwood design—a  silk satin column dress with a draped corset top and pearl details.

For the after-party, the bride wore two ensembles: a custom Lapointe suit followed by a custom House of Idan mini dress featuring an off-the-shoulder, corset design.

Designer Idan Cohen, who specializes in corsets, was tapped by Demi and her stylist Jill Jacobs to create a look that would be part of her wedding day wardrobe. He was provided with inspiration photos, and in February, Idan made a few sketches of different looks. Then, he sent fabric options to Demi. A French silk satin was chosen.

“This silk is amazing, but it’s very, very delicate,” says Idan, who had to wear gloves while working with this dainty fabric.

Once he had created the sample, he flew to Los Angeles for a fitting with Demi. She loved the couture dress, but wanted one tweak—a shorter length. So, the designer worked with his team in Israel to make a new version. Throughout the process, several versions of the same dress were made until it was perfect.

Idan notes all the hard work it takes to craft such an elegant hand-draped dress.

“We take the fabric and we drape it on the mannequin. I use a pattern only for the base as the lining and all the rest is just draped by hand,” explains the designer. “So it’s really a lot of work. It seems like it’s flowy and easy, but it takes a lot of time to create.”

The House of Idan dress nicely complemented Demi’s ceremony and reception looks. Idan thinks all the designers received the same inspiration and then Jill Jacobs and Demi, “created a story for her dresses.”

Idan did not know that his dress would be worn during her after party. “It actually was very confidential,” he says. “We didn’t know exactly when she was going to wear it.” The day after the wedding, Jill told Idan that Demi wore his design during her after party and loved it.

“I was thrilled and excited,” says Idan. To hear that she loved the dress, “this was the most important thing for me, that she would love something for the day of her wedding.”

For other brides who plan to wear multiple looks on their big day, Idan says, “the most important thing is to choose the right pattern, the right dress that will flatter the brides in the best way.”

He suggests not opting for a trendy dress just because it’s currently in style if it doesn’t suit you. “Every bride is beautiful,” he says, “[and every bride] needs to really feel very good with the dress.”

Idan, whose primary United States atelier is in Lambertville, will offer limited appointments for brides at that location. “It’s going to be a different experience,” he says. Brides who want custom dresses will work directly with a designer. “Some brides really want to do something unique, only for them,” he says, “and I would be happy to do it for them.”

Before designing Demi’s after-party dress, Idan was no stranger to dressing celebrities. He has worked with Carrie Underwood, Nicki Minaj, J. Lo, Paula Abdul and Laverne Cox, to name a few.

But creating a dress for Demi on her wedding day was definitely a career highlight.

“This is huge,” he says, “I’m so happy and I’m thrilled. To see those pictures right now, for me, it’s everything.”

Just as thrilled are the happy couple. Demi and Jutes met in 2022 while recording Demi’s latest album, Revamped. He proposed in December 2023.

Of her wedding day, Demi said on Instagram: “Sunday was the best day of my life. I got to marry the man of my dreams who just so happens to be my best friend and soulmate on the most perfect day, with my closest friends and family, surrounded by so much love.”

She ended the post with these words: “I love you more than words could ever describe. Here’s to eternity baby.”
