A Relaxing Mini-Moon in Baltimore

Posted on December 17, 2019 by Deborah P. Carter

A trip to Baltimore’s Sagamore Pendry Hotel will not only satisfy your yen for a relaxing getaway after the big day, it will surprise and delight you. At this 100-plus year old converted warehouse, classic charm meets industrial chic by offering the best of both worlds. There are 128 beautifully tailored guest rooms, water views, fine dining, and a seasonal swim club, all set amid a burgeoning, walkable metropolis.

The hotel’s aesthetic relies on history and bold, playful art. From the lobby’s framed, steel screen of Star Spangled Banner stanzas to the 3,500-pound, 12-foot bronze Fernando Botero horse sculpture in the courtyard, this place is a visual treat. Guest quarters are a continuation of thoughtful details that incorporate a sophisticated, sea-faring theme with a contemporary bent. Rooms are spacious with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the courtyard, pool or harbor. The décor has a clubby, handsome feel lightened by soft furnishings—plush headboards, upholstered chairs and sofas—and whimsical art.

It’s tempting to stay tucked in your room with the sumptuous bedding and elegant marble bathrooms (some suites even have half baths and private balconies), but do venture out. Wander the halls were the art is also in the architecture, such as the ornate black-steel balcony rail that overlooks the posh, lobby lounge and reappears in several iterations throughout the hotel. (There are so many clever and creative details in the décor and architecture; it’s worth stopping at the front desk for the hotel’s art and history pamphlet, so you don’t miss a thing!) Make your way to the courtyard to sit in front of a crackling fire or, in good weather, hit the pool, where sun sparkles off the harbor and lunch and cocktails are served.

Dine in the one of the hotel’s restaurants: Rec Pier Chop House for Italian classic and creative or the Cannon Room, a traditional whiskey bar with a tightly curated menu of American dishes.

One of the Sagamore Pendry’s many charms is its location. Explore the Fells Point neighborhood’s eclectic array of shops, bars and restaurants. Or, alongside the hotel entrance, you can grab a water taxi to Inner Harbor, or just joyride your day away on the water before returning for another night of luxury.

Rates from $295 per night. 1715 Thames Street, Baltimore, MD; pendry.com.
