A Nautical September Wedding at Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May

Posted on February 09, 2024 by New Jersey Bride

As a favorite vacation spot and the site of their engagement, Cape May holds a special place in Laura and Ky’s hearts. That’s why their Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May wedding was the perfect venue for their nautical September 9, 2023.

“Ky and I met in 2017 in Troy, New York,” says Laura. “We were both living in upstate New York at the time. We dated for a number of years while living in Saratoga Springs, New York, which was so fun! Then we moved in together and moved to Boston for work. We love to travel together, enjoy the company of our friends, and cook together. Of course, Cape May has also been part of our love story (even before the proposal) as it is a highlight of our year. There is nothing better than being at the beach with each other and family for the week!”

“We got engaged on the beach at Cape May Point in July 2022,” says Laura. “We were on our annual summer vacation with my family and went to watch the sunset. Ky had brought champagne and hired a photographer to capture the moment. We got back to the house my family was staying at and everyone was on the porch ready to celebrate our engagement with us!”

“Our wedding was simple and so beautiful,” says Laura. “We had an entire weekend of events, the rehearsal lunch at La Dona in Cape May, then we all went to the beach. Welcome drinks were on the porch of the Inn of Cape May, where a live band was playing and the ocean breeze was terrific. Our cake was three tiers with a peach watercolor looking base layer and flowers cascading down the side, it was butter cake with lemon curd filing. I highly recommend the bakery! The colors during the wedding were primarily neutral with soft pinks and peaches. The bridesmaids wore satin rose gold dresses and the groomsmen wore black tuxes. The flowers for the bouquets, at the ceremony, and in the reception were soft, fluffy and romantic.

“We knew we wanted to be right in Cape May,” says Laura. “My family has been going to Cape May for over 20 years each summer, Ky had come the last five years, and we got engaged on Cape May Point! It is such a special place for us and we knew we wanted to create even more memories with friends and family there. The yacht club provided a unique opportunity to be right on the water without the hassle of a beach wedding with wind and sand. It was private, offered different spaces for each portion of the day, had beautiful views, and the white tent, with sparking lights, directly on the water could not be beat. We had a great experience with their general manager and chef as well—so it felt right from the first time we visited.”

Favorite Moment

“It’s hard to choose as the entire day was filled with so much love and fun, ” says Laura. “The ceremony especially was one of my favorite parts of the day. Having our closest friends and family supporting and celebrating the beginning of our marriage was amazing. I could not stop smiling. The other moment that sticks out to me was our private last dance, our DJ played ‘Always Remember Us This Way’ and we had a few minutes in the tent to ourselves before heading to the after party at the Boiler Room. It was an emotional moment to slow down together, take in the day, the ceremony, the celebration and all the love surrounding us.”

“Two things – 1) The flowers! I cannot recommend Savannah’s Garden enough,” says Laura. “The owner, Laura, was so easy to work with and brought our vision to life. The flowers were the perfect accent to the room and helped create a romantic atmosphere. 2) We had each guest select a piece of stained glass to hold during the ceremony and return before cocktail hour. They were asked to impart their blessings and best wishes upon the glass. That glass, held by all of our guests, was then made into a stained glass piece of art that hangs in our home. It is a living memory and prayer surrounding us with love.”

Advice

“Try to be present in as much of the day as you can,” says Laura. “There is so much going on, so much excitement and energy but it really does go by fast! Having planned time for the two of you to step back and look or reflect on what an amazing event and life you created is a moment you’ll never forget.”

“We went to Hawaii for 10 days,” says Laura. “We flew out two weeks after the wedding. We were able to go to Kauai and Maui. We absolutely loved the beaches, the food, and taking the time to slow down and enjoy. We went on some great hikes and even swam with sea turtles!”
