How did you meet?
Rebecca and Shain met on Tinder in December 2015. The bride took the first step to reach out to the groom after spotting his signature portmanteau “I’m a Juban” on his profile, reflecting his Cuban and Jewish heritage. The bride, whose paternal lineage is also “Juban,” reached out to learn more about the groom. The convergence of these two cultures has been paramount to the couple, who have observed Jewish holidays over Spanish and Cuban cuisines since meeting. What happened next was a whirlwind of dates and learned coincidences. In May 2017, the couple purchased their first home together in New Jersey, where they still live today.

Will You Marry Me?
The groom proposed to the bride at Liberty House Restaurant inside Liberty State Park overseeing lower Manhattan, where New Jersey meets New York on a cold and rainy February night.

Details of the day:
Our wedding day was perfect—the morning started bright and early as we got ready at our venue Nanina’s in the Park, and stayed there for the day for photography and videography before our ceremony and reception.

Our wedding colors were burgundy, navy blue, gold and ivory. Our guest favors were miniature candles that read “Keep the fire burning.” True to our roots, our shared Cuban, Jewish and Spanish heritage was displayed throughout the night.

Readings were done in English and Spanish, and we participated
in a traditional Jewish horah.

Why did you choose your venue?
It was love at first sight as soon as we first stepped into Nanina’s. After getting the full tour, we canceled all other venue tours we had for the day! I’ve always wanted a September wedding, and it seemed like kismet that they had only one date left for a September weekend wedding when we came in. Every time we told people where we were getting married, people would rave about the great food, beautiful location and excellent white-glove service there. Along the way, the staff at Nanina’s was perfectly professional, helpful and supportive—we thank them one million times over for everything!

What was on your menu?
Dinner: A choice of Chateaubriand, Chicken Saltimbocca, Red Snapper with Lobster or Eggplant Lasagna, all served with potatoes and root vegetables. Dessert: Viennese display with mini cakes, cookies, creme brulees, gelati, chocolate fountain and more. Cake: Base layer: Yellow cake with dulce de leche filling. Middle layer: Chocolate cake with vanilla filling. Top layer: Yellow cake and cookies ‘n’ creme filling.

All about your gown!
My gown was a mermaid-fit Allure Bridals gown. The dress itself was custom beaded and took over 10 months to bead by hand with selected crystals and pearls along the bodice—the finished product weighed nearly 15 pounds! The skirt was adorned with Spanish-inspired frills, an ode to my Spanish heritage. As soon as I tried on the dress, I knew it was “the one” and made a few additional changes to the body and beading to make it one of a kind, and over the top. Everyone loved it and could not stop complimenting how it hugged my figure. It was made for me!

What was your favorite moment?
Our first look. It felt amazing to have that moment alone together in the garden at Nanina’s to ground ourselves in what was about to happen later that night. We just looked at each other, all dressed up, and brought ourselves to tears at how happy we were to see each other and counting down the moments until we said “I do.”

One detail you couldn’t live without?
Our flowers! My best friend from high school started her own event-planning and design firm, Carmen and Co., and they did a phenomenal job with our bouquets, boutonnieres and centerpieces. Everyone loved them and were fighting to take them home at the end of the night!

Did anything go wrong?
My bustle broke right after my horah! I had a very extended and heavy train, so the bustle was necessary. Lucky, my mom and bridal attendant swooped in and DIY-ed a solution with extra safety pins!

First dance song?
“Is that Alright?” by Lady Gaga

Any advice for future brides?
Stay cool and trust your vendors! I am a bit of a control freak, and toward the end I was very anxious about making sure everything went right down to the last detail. Luckily, my world class vendors were so supportive and trustworthy, and made everything perfect on the day of!

Honeymoon:
We will be going to the Cook Islands in the South Pacific for two weeks.
