Although Lucy Esteves grew up just 30 minutes from Manhattan in Harrison, she really wanted an outdoor wedding in the country. “Frank and I aren’t ballgown and chandelier people,” she admits.
The two met through mutual friends in 2003, and Lucy mustered the courage to ask him to her Harrison High School prom. Fortunately, he said yes. Seven years later, Frank, who hails from Newark, proposed to Lucy on a weekend jaunt to Martha’s Vineyard. “He asked me to take a midnight stroll on the beach, and when we were near the lighthouse, he tried to pull the ring box out of his pocket, but it got stuck,” Lucy says. “I thought, ‘What are you doing?’ And then he got down on one knee and took my breath away.” Both the bride, who just graduated from nursing school, and the groom, who recently completed his accounting degree, wanted their wedding day to reflect their Portuguese heritage.
So, on June 30, 2012, following a church ceremony, they hosted a reception at Frank’s family home on 12-acre Roda Farm in Pittstown.
Wedding planner Jenny Orsini of Jenny Orsini Events worked with Lucy to pull off an elegantly shabby-chic affair, complete with whimsical flowers, romantic candles and guest seating crafted of quilt-covered hay bales.
Next to a big red barn, more than 200 guests were treated to dinner entrées of Chilean sea bass, chicken au porto and Chateaubriand; wedding cake and pastries; Portuguese music and traditions; and sweet favors—jars of honey shipped from Portugal. “Jenny was the only planner I interviewed, and I made the right decision,” Lucy says. “She let me have it my way despite my crazy tendencies to change my mind. I found ideas on Pinterest and she made it all happen. One of our best decisions was to rent an amazing tent. We definitely did not cheap-out on the tent, and it was well worth the money.”
The only little glitch was when Frank accidentally stepped on Lucy’s gown just before the cake was cut. But Jenny was there, ready with a quick fix that couldn’t be detected in the wedding photos. After a honeymoon trip to Hawaii, the couple is at home in Colonia.
