Kayla and Matt Huber, who tied the knot at the Chapel at Sandy Hook on June 1, 2024, had known each other for years prior to dating. “Our families hung out when we were kids. We went to the same parties, had play dates at McDonald’s,” Kayla says.
They even went to the same high school but “didn’t really hang with the same people at the same time.” Later on, they started running into each other at bars, and one night, “Matt finally made a move and kissed me,” Kayla says. Their first date was at a Devils hockey game, after Kayla told Matt she’d won tickets (“I did not,” she says.) “It has been endless laughs, adventures and love since.”
One night, Kayla came home from work to find the lights off, the house lit with candles and string lights on in the backyard.
“There was a path of candles and rose petals to the backyard,” she says. “There Matt stood in a suit with both of our dogs in the place we have made a home. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was perfectly intimate and in our favorite place.”
The couple had planned to get married on September 23, 2023. But nine months prior to that date, they found out Kayla was pregnant. Kayla and Matt ended up welcoming their daughter just one day after their original wedding date, September 24, 2023, and tied the knot a few months later on June 1, 2024.
The pair wanted their wedding day “to capture our laidback personalities,” says Kayla.
“We are always hosting at our home and I wanted it to be a little bit fancier version of being at home at the Jersey Shore,” she says.
That included a lot of DIY-style work from the bride and groom.
“Everything was done by us. There was not a single chair or table we didn’t touch,” says Kayla, who chose a color scheme of bright pink, orange and yellow, with a splash of blue. “It truly was everything we could have ever imagined.”
It had a “laidback feel,” says Kayla, and was cost-effective with the couple’s 200-person guest list.
“Honestly the whole wedding. There wasn’t a moment Matt and I weren’t smiling,” says Kayla.
The sailcloth tent and the black-and-white dance floor.
“Definitely get a wedding planner or day-of coordinator,” says Kayla. “We were setting up til 12 pm the night before.”
