How did you meet?
Micah and I met through the Brazilian martial art of Capoeira. I was in the process of winding down my dance career and looking for a new physical practice to fill the void in my life. Micah just happened to be the first person I met at the Capoeira Academy. He was standing by the front door waiting for our Mestre (teacher) to arrive and we struck up a conversation. From our initial meeting, it took about 6 months of training together in class and Instagram flirting before Micah finally asked me out to dinner. Initially, I wasn’t even totally sure if it was a date. However, post-dinner it became abundantly clear that in fact it was a date and we haven’t looked back since!

How did you get engaged?
In December of 2019, we were hiking the Awa’awapuhi trail on my childhood home of Kauai. It had been raining for the majority of the time we were visiting, but on this particular day, it was picture-perfect sunny blue skies! We were accompanied by a childhood friend of mine and had been laughing and joking the entire hike. At the end of the hike is an incredible 360-degree view of the Na Pali coast. Once we reached this vantage point we spent some time taking pictures, eating sandwiches, and cracking more jokes. Then as we were packing up to leave and hike out, Micah asked my friend to take one more picture of Micah and me together with the view. I was confused and started saying something along the lines of, “Why? We already did that?” … and then Micah got down on one knee and popped the question at the perfect time for our friend to snap some photos! Once we got engaged we planned on having a longer engagement (1.5 years) because of all the other weddings we had initially been scheduled to attend in 2020, and with COVID this actually turned out to be a decision that really played in our favor. Who could have known?!

Details of the day!
Like any couple who has had to plan their wedding over the last 18 months, our wedding went through many iterations before landing on the one we did. However, in retrospect, I will say that the version we ended up choosing was truly perfect and most meaningful for us. Our wedding was small, only 55 people. Making this decision was tough, originally our guest list had been 118 people. Because of COVID, we pared it down to only family and a handful of our nearest and dearest friends. Every detail about our wedding was personal and hand-crafted. Because our wedding was small and our budget was tight we did as much of the work as we could ourselves. Initially, we joked that our wedding theme was “grandma chic.” Together, my aunt and I made all of the party favors: classic color-coordinated potholders. We borrowed all of the tables and chairs we needed from a nearby neighbor. The linens and plates were also an assortment of things that belonged to my aunt and things that we borrowed from friends. Each table was different. The flowers were all grown and arranged by my aunt on her farm where we got married and the rabbi who married us is a close friend.

Why did you choose your venue?
We chose to get married at my aunt and uncle’s farm in Pottersville because it is so beautiful and feels like home. Together Micah and I have spent a lot of time at the farm and it is right down the road from where I went to boarding school.

What was on your menu?
Our wedding menu was simple and summer-y. It was catered by Bex Eatery of Calfon, NJ, and was served as a buffet. Highlights from the buffet included salmon filet, mache watercress salad, Veggie tart, and a beet farro kale salad. For simplicity’s sake, and because we had a daytime wedding, we decided to skip the cake and opted for individual chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, which were delicious.

All about your gown!
My gown was super simple, classic, and farmy. From the get-go I knew that I wanted something I could wear again after my wedding, so ideally I was looking for a dress that I could dye a different color after my wedding. Dress shopping during peak COVID was the least romantic experience I could have imagined. Basically, my aunt and I scoured the internet together, ordered a bunch of dresses we thought might work, and then one day I tried them all on at home. I knew that the one I chose was the one when I tried it on because it fit the best and made me feel like Anne of Green Gables, which was kind of the vibe I was going for.

What was your favorite moment?
There were so many favorite moments from our day that it is really hard for me to pick just one. However, the thing that will stay with me forever is the feeling I had sitting at our two-top bride and groom table over brunch and looking out at all of the other tables filled with our friends and loved ones laughing, talking, and sharing the joy together.

One detail you couldn’t live without?
My flower crown and bouquet. I always knew that I didn’t want to wear a veil. Originally, we had planned for my aunt to make my flower crown and bouquet in addition to growing and arranging all of the flowers for the wedding! However, as we got closer to our wedding we realized that it was going to be way more work than we thought so my cousin hired Sam from Fairview Farm & Flowers to do just the bridal flowers and they were perfect. Looking back at our photos I really appreciate the detail of these two elements.

Did anything go wrong?
Thankfully, nothing went terribly wrong the day of our wedding. However, it was extremely sunny and hot. Because we didn’t have a tent to cover our ceremony area we ended up buying water bottles for each of our guests’ seats the day of. A few savvy parents stripped their kiddos and dunked them in the pond.

First dance song?
Unfortunately because of COVID, we had to forgo our initial dance party plans, but instead, we are planning to have an epic one-year anniversary dance party in Summer 2022!

Any advice for future brides?
Don’t think that you can do it all yourself! I previously worked in catering and event planning so I made the mistake of thinking I could do it all myself because we were having a smaller wedding. I was wrong. Wedding planning can be stressful and feel expensive, but I promise that the services you are paying for are worth it and will make your actual experience on the day so much brighter! Also, don’t let the stress of planning suck the joy out of what you are doing in marrying your life partner. Make sure that 2 or 3 days before your wedding you hand off all of the lingering responsibilities to someone else (or mentally make peace with all of the things you can’t control) and let yourself settle in to enjoy the ride. It all goes by so fast you will want to savor it!

Black Bass Inn in Lumberville, PA. It was beautiful, relaxing, delicious, and only an hour away.
