How did you meet?
At a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. My husband was on H&I (Hospitals & Institutions.) We both were in recovery from heroin addiction. I met him when gathering more information about H&I, which brings the lifesaving message of Narcotics Anonymous into facilities, detox, rehabs and jails where people cannot get to scheduled meetings. My husband has been clean for six years and has helped me in my own struggles the 4.75 years we have been together.

How did you get engaged?
We got engaged at Michael’s aunt’s house in Connecticut, which overlooks Candlewick lake. The original plan was to propose on a boat in the lake. Then the generator died. They got a new generator and then the subpump was dead. His aunt was crying and my husband was upset. I couldn’t understand why. I said, “We can just use the boat next year.” And then two hours later he got down on one knee by the pool with the beautiful scenery and asked me for my hand. He was so nervous he was shaking and tried to put the ring on the wrong finger. My husband has a very large ego so to see the nervous side of him was especially cute.

Details of the day!
Theme was classics. Flowers were simple: white roses, blue flowers andsage green. Favors were engraved coasters of a picture of us kissing.

Why did you choose your venue?
I wanted to get married in a castle, but wanted my family to be there. Then we found the Legacy Castle and it was like a dream come true.

What was on your menu?
There was an hour-long cocktail hour with everything under the sun, including root-beer floats and a specialty fry bar. Entrées were filet mignon, salmon and a chicken dish. Dessert was wedding cake and table selection of a multitude of desserts.

All about your gown:
It was classic, simple and had the long train that I wanted (probably from my fondness of the Sound of Music.) It was the second dress I tried on. I went to about five other stores after that and when i found the same dress at the last store, I KNEW it was the one.

What was your favorite moment?
Our wedding dance. We went to a ballroom instructor for private lessons to choreograph our dance. The first minute and a half was by Zayne, “From Dusk till Dawn.” The second half was “Wonderful Tonight,” by Eric Clapton. And our wedding music for walking down the aisle was “Memories,” from the Black Beauty soundtrack. I used to figure skate to it as a child when i was competing. My dog got put to sleep while i was on my honeymoon and my mom played him this song as he went to sleep for the last time.

One detail you couldn’t live without?
The custom choreographed wedding dance.

Did anything go wrong?
Everything. Covid happened, with all the worries of not being able to cancel and not knowing whether we’d be able to have the wedding indoors or outside. Indoor dining opened up fortunately, since our wedding day was beautiful but definitely not warm. My husband’s stepmother was allergic to shellfish and we had it all pulled from the menu, but it was out at cocktail hour. We were supposed to have Zoom recorded since neither of our grandmothers could attend and we couldn’t afford to have everyone from my job come, so we were supposed to have live Zoom the entire day, but the person responsible messed it up and ruined the Zoom. We had three deaths in the year between booking the contract and the actual wedding, including the best man.

First dance song?
“From Dusk Till Dawn,” by Zayne and “Wonderful Tonight,” by Eric Clapton.

Any advice for future brides?
ENJOY EVERY DETAIL AND MOMENT. It goes by way too fast.

Honeymoon:
Jamaica. We originally were going to do Tahiti but the flights were terrible and I was scared to leave the country with Covid. Then we tried to book Hawaii and there was a two-week mandatory quarantine, so we wouldn’t have been able to leave the hotel room. With the Covid situation, we finally settled on an all-inclusive in Jamaica.
