Heather Measley to David D’Amico at One Atlantic

 The Details:

Heather Measley was surrounded by her closest friends and relatives when David D’Amico popped the question at her surprise engagement party. But before she could fall asleep that night, there was one person she still needed to tell. The bride-to-be sent a late-night email to Elizabeth McGlinn, the director at One Atlantic, and the two were on the phone the next morning to find a wedding date. Heather had fallen for the Atlantic City event space while attending a bridal shower there several months earlier. The venue, on a pier 100 feet above the ocean, offers dramatic views. “It’s breathtaking,” Heather says. “We wanted our guests to be wowed the whole night.”

True to her wishes, Heather, 26, and David, 38, tied the knot at One Atlantic on November 8, 2012, just days after Atlantic City reopened following Hurricane Sandy and a day after a nor’easter brought snow. The weather cooperated, though, allowing Heather and David to pose for outdoor photos. Their 4:45 p.m. ceremony was timed to the setting sun. “It was the perfect sunset,” Heather says.

The newlyweds and their 190 guests enjoyed a cocktail hour, and the party got started with a 15-minute burst of dancing that culminated with the couple being lifted up in chairs on the dance floor. Though the couple is not Jewish, David had again caught Heather off guard by secretly arranging for their chairs to be held aloft, a tradition at Jewish celebrations. “It was a dream of mine,” she says.

The colors of the evening—fuchsia and teal—were infused with meaning. Teal ribbons are used in the fight against ovarian cancer, which struck Heather when she was 18; the pink ribbon is the fundraising symbol for breast cancer, which Heather’s mother had a year before the wedding. “I loved the colors already, and it was symbolic of my mom’s survivorship and my survivorship,” says Heather, who, like her mom, is cancer-free. The vibrant hues also reflected Heather and David’s sunny dispositions. “Even though it was fall, I wanted it to be our personality—bright, happy and optimistic,” Heather says. She was thrilled that all of her planning had become a reality. “I felt like it was a fairy tale come true,” she says. The couple honeymooned at Sandals Antigua, and are at home in Margate.—Lisa Flam
