With so many couples postponing their weddings until 2021 or beyond—and wedding-gown salons not having the room to store the altered and ready-to-go gowns—brides have been inquiring about how it’s safe to best store them at home. So I reached out to designer Sareh Nouri for her expert advice.

Here’s how to store your wedding gown at home:

  1. You can store your gown in the plastic and garment bag that it comes in.
  2. Place it in a closet that is well ventilated, not in an attic or basement.
  3. Make sure that the gown is away from sunlight.
  4. Keep the area clean and check on your dress every once in a while.
  5. Make sure that if there are other clothes in the closet, that they are clean and dry, because soiled clothing can attract moths.
  6. Prevent moths. Wipe down the closet walls, baseboards, clothing rods and shelves every few months with a soft cloth and homemade all-purpose cleaner. Store only clean and dry fabrics in the closet since moths are attracted to odors, oil and moisture in fabrics that are soiled with food or grime.
