Question of the week: Must I wear his grandmother's engagement or wedding ring?
This is a dicey situation, to be sure. If your husband-to-be presents you with an engagement ring or wedding ring that has been in his family for years, the first thing to do is graciously thank him for honoring you with this heirloom. Of course, if you love the ring, everything is perfect.
But if you really don't care for the style, it's best to gently break the news to your guy in a private conversation. Just explain that, although you are sincerely honored by his gesture, you have always dreamed of an engagement ring or wedding ring of another style or something a little simpler.
Although you might feel awkward, you might as well tell him now. It will only become more difficult if you wear the engagement or wedding ring for a while and then announce that you really can't see yourself wearing it for the rest of your life.
Tactfully yours,
Susan
