Cakes have recently become a design element unto themselves. Long gone are the days of the basic white basket-weave confection—even though they’re truly still my favorite! This classic standby has been replaced by elaborate tiers that may be monogrammed, blinged out with crystals, piled so high that the cake is taller than the bride, tricked out in alternating flavors, ensconced in edible layers of gold, or topped with oftentimes scary bride-and-groom cake toppers.

So it comes as no surprise that brides may feel overwhelmed when they have to choose just one design. The cake pictured here by Carlo’s City Hall Bake Shop in Hoboken offers the perfect fall dessert accessory. “If you have a simple décor,” says wedding planner Candice Benson of the Finishing Touch in West Orange, “keep the cake simple with a minimal design of matching colors and florals.” And for a yummy fall flavor, she recommends pumpkin with cream-cheese filling or a spice cake with your favorite autumn fruits. This proves that bigger is not better; in fact, we prefer them short and sweet—with a definite emphasis on the sweet!
