That’s why a growing number of brides are following in the footsteps of such Hollywood starlets as Jennifer Garner and Reese Witherspoon and choosing airbrush makeup for their big day. “It provides a flawless finish that is fade-proof, waterproof, and smudge-proof,” says Michele Falco of Bridal by Michele (908-309-5523; bridalbymichele.com) in Long Branch. Here’s a rundown on this beauty breakthrough:
WHAT IS IT? Special lightweight makeup—usually made of silicone—is put into an airbrush (which resembles a small pen) and then gently sprayed onto the face. “It feels like a cool mist, which many clients find soothing,” explains makeup artist Jillyan Scarpa, owner of Skin Bar and Paint Studio (973-785-0500; skinbarandpaint.com) in Little Falls.
WHAT ARE THE BENFITS? The water-based formula is shine-free and perfect for everyone, even those with sensitive skin. And since three or four colors can be mixed together at once, you’re guaranteed a perfect skin tone match—no concealer necessary! “It gives a woman completely flawless skin in person, and a seamless look that’s perfect for DVDs and photos,” says Lisa Severino of Makeup Bar (856-795-0025; themake-upbar.com) in Cherry Hill.
Another big plus for brides is the longevity—airbrush makeup is water-resistant and can last up to 24 hours (regular makeup only lasts about four), so even tears, sweat, and humidity can’t ruin your wedding-day look. When you’re ready, simply scrub it off with soap and water.
WHERE CAN YOU USE IT? The only place it can’t be used is under the eyes, where the skin is thin and makeup tends to cake. The rest of the face is fine for airbrushing, but most makeup artists prefer to stick with foundation, blush, and eyebrow shading. While you can airbrush on eye shadow, it gives a more theatrical look that some brides don’t want on their wedding day. “Airbrushing can also cover tattoos, birthmarks, rosacea, and unwanted tan lines with ease,” notes Falco.
WHAT DOES IT COST? There is a slight price increase for airbrushing at most salons—the average is $25 more than a traditional application. But that’s small price to pay for all-day beauty.
