If you’re looking for a close getaway with beautiful beaches, perfect 80-degree days, hip restaurants, relaxing spas, a pulsating nightlife, exciting casinos, fascinating history, watersports, and plenty of activities—from hiking through a rain forest to an old-world history tour of Old San Juan—Puerto Rico is a great option.

Then add to the list the fact that you don’t need a passport—for all of you procrastinators—and this Caribbean island paradise meaning “rich port” becomes the perfect honeymoon destination.

Each year brings more resorts to the island, all with their own unique personality, but here are our favorites:
gran melia puerto rico Built in 2004, the Gran Melia is a gorgeous beachfront resort located about 30 minutes from the airport. From the tropical open-air common areas to the beautifully decorated rooms, it offers the perfect beach escape. Be truly pampered with their Royal Service package. After your private check-in and personalized escort to the room, you’ll have exclusive use of the Royal Service pool, with no kids allowed. Lounge in thatched Bali-style palapas, with a cocktail bar close at hand and the ocean within view. Have your butler draw a rose-petal bath in your private whirlpool on the balcony overlooking the ocean, or ask him to arrange reservations at one of the resort’s four restaurants or YHI spa.

Take advantage of the complimentary continental breakfast, tea, hors d’oeuvres, and an open bar in the Royal Service lounge. And enjoy the casino and live entertainment at night. If you’re into golf, you’re in luck. The brand-new Trump International Golf Club Puerto Rico, home to the 2008 Puerto Rico Open, is literally right next door. Royal Service rates start at $225 per night. 866-436-3542; gran-meliapuertorico.com.

El Conquistador Resort and Spa: Once you arrive at this cliffside four-star resort, about a forty-five minute drive from the airport, you’ll never need to leave. It has recently undergone extension renovations and sports a fresh new look. You’ll love the Golden Door Spa, Arthur Hills golf course with ocean views, a newly renovated casino, 23 restaurants, bars, and lounges. The best part is the resort’s own private island with white sand beaches and horseback riding. And for the kid in you, there’s the brand-new Coqui Water Park with a lazy river, four slides, and multiple pools, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Rates start at $199 per night. 866-317-8932; elconresort.com.

Hotel El Convento:
This beautiful former convent dating back to 1651 is an historical and architectural gem in the heart of Old San Juan. Situated within a medieval walled city right across the street from the famed San Juan Cathedral—the oldest church in the Western Hemisphere (where Marc Anthony married his first wife, Dayanara Torres)—this resort offers a step back in time.

But as a four-star resort and member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, it has been superbly restored, and no luxury has been overlooked. With 58 guest rooms, four restaurants, a rooftop plunge pool with a view of the city, fitness rooms, honor bar, and masseuses upon request, this small boutique-style hotel has the feel of a European inn. Recent celebrity guests include Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, and Pink. Explore Old San Juan by day, and dine in the hotel’s tapas bar at night. Or take advantage of the sister beach properties, where you can be taken to enjoy a day of sand and surf. Rates start at $160. 800-468-2779; elconvento.com.

El San Juan Hotel & Casino:
The El San Juan is a hip beachfront resort that’s a little bit of Vegas, a little bit of South Beach, and a whole lot of personality just five minutes from the airport. Originally built in 1958, the El San Juan attracted celebrities such as Sammy Davis, Jr., and Frank Sinatra to its white-sand beaches in the trendy Isla Verde district. Today, this four-diamond resort is still the hot magnet, attracting guests who want to play by day and party into the night. You can feel the energetic vibe as soon as you enter the lobby. With 382 rooms, 33 suites, eight restaurants, 15 bars, lounges, and nightclubs, the Edouard de Paris Day Spa, the island’s largest casino, two pools with sundecks, waterfalls, and whirlpools, private cabanas on the beach, watersports, tennis, and a fitness center, it’s the perfect honeymoon hotspot. Rates start at $149 per night. 866-317-8935. elsanjuanhotel.com.

Ritz-Carlton San Juan Hotel, Spa & Casino: For a calmer, more subdued honeymoon, there’s the Ritz-Carlton, just a few steps down the beach from the El San Juan. Here you’ll be treated to the usual Ritz five-star amenities: oceanfront pool and Jacuzzi, 416 beautifully decorated rooms with Bulgari bath products and Frette linens, flat-panel LCD televisions, complete concierge service, business center, five restaurants, 24-hour casino, soothing luxury spa, fitness center, 24-hour room service, complimentary high-speed Internet, wireless connections at the pool and beach, and complimentary use of all nonmotorized watersports. You can always go clubbing at other nightclubs in the area, then return to the calm and civility of the Ritz to sleep and reenergize. Rates start at $249 per night 800-542-8680; ritzcarlton.com.
