One of the more popular ways of improving your teeth is by whitening. In the past several years it has become more and more common for people to whiten their teeth, either by visiting a dentist or buying over-the-counter products. Both options remove stains and discolorations and brighten the overall color of your teeth.
Though over-the-counter products are effective, if you desire a brighter white that lasts for years, a visit to the dentist is your best choice. The two most popular whitening treatments available today are Zoom Whitening and Britesmile, which are both very similar in application and results. During a one-hour session, a dentist puts a protective covering over the gums and applies a gel to the teeth. Then, a laser shooting bright light is put against the teeth to enhance the whitening effects of the gel. This painless procedure is repeated three times during the hour session. Afterward, teeth are instantly up to eight shades whiter and with little maintenance, will remain that way for several years.
Another popular dental procedure is veneers, which are thin shells custom-made to fit over the front of your teeth. Veneers are a good option for people whose teeth are broken, clipped, stained, uneven, or have gaps. Unlike bonding, veneers will never change color over time and will normally last between five and ten years. Traditional veneers are applied by first shaving down the structure of the tooth and then cementing the shell-like veneer to the tooth. The process is irreversible and can be lengthy and painful.
A newer version of the dental procedure, called Lumineers, has improved upon some of the pitfalls of traditional veneers. Lumineers require oly two doctor visits, and the procedure can be reversed, since the structure of the tooth is not damaged. The procedure can be costly, but it is painless and lasts up to 20 years.
For minor repairs, dentists recommend enamel shaping, which can correct rough edges, minor chips, overlapping or uneven teeth, and teeth that appear too long. Enamel shaping involves contouring the tooth to create a smoother, more symmetrical line. The process is pain-free, more economical, and usually can be completed within one quick dental visit.
Depending on the procedure, you can expect to spend anywhere from $200 to $3,000 in the pursuit to perfect your teeth. But, since you will be constantly showing off your smile on your wedding day, consider your new pearly whites a wise investment.
