During its recent $109 million renovation, a lot of importance was placed on the use of green energy, resulting in the construction of a green roof, which is covered with soil, sod, and a variety of plants. Over time, the roof will become populated with indigenous plants, which will in turn attract ecosystems that include insects and birds. Green-roofed buildings consume less energy, lowering heating and air-conditioning costs by 25 percent. The center also installed a $1.9 million solar panel system and a wind turbine, which will allow it to create 25 percent of its energy needs through renewable sources.
And for your reception, held on the exhibit floors when the building is closed to the public, they’ll also avoid the use of paper and plastic, and will recycle all cardboard and aluminum. For more information on holding your “green” wedding at the Science Center, call 201-451-0006, ext. 327.
