Design Cakes

From flowers (fresh or sugar) and piping to ribbons and bows of fondant, the sky’s the limit when deciding which details will adorn your cake. Choices include a bold style with bright colors or metallic accents to complement a more elaborate venue; a stately confection with piping that mimics the beading on your dress; a more organic-looking dessert that favors ripples of buttercream; or a cake with cascading flowers to match your bridal bouquet. There’s no wrong way of doing it. The one thing to remember is that the cake should match your personality, says Christine Pereira of Design Cakes in North Arlington (201-991-4500; designcakes.com), who made the fondant cake pictured above. Most of her clients want something that is unique. “We try to see what their personality is, and to match that,” she says. “Every single cake we do is designed just for that event.” But there is one thing that is definitely outdated: the plastic bride-and-groom wedding topper. “There are many new alternatives,” Pereira says, “including a bouquet of flowers, a bow and brooch combination or a monogram.” So have fun when designing your cake—and when eating it, too.
