Jewelry to wear to the wedding, like a pearl bracelet or a monogrammed locket, makes a perfect present for flower girls of all ages. “It's very cute, and little girls, at a very early age, like jewelry," says wedding designer Amy DeVito of Oh So Fabulous in Maywood.
Wedding-related trinkets help flower girls—usually ages 4 to 10—feel connected to such a grown-up event. “It’s a way of keeping the flower girl involved,” DeVito says. “When they’re really little, they get lost in the shuffle.”
Another popular gift is a customized canvas tote bag with her name and the wedding date, tricked out with a favorite character and filled with Disney princesses or coloring books and stickers to keep her busy during the reception.
Many items come with “Flower Girl” already emblazoned on them, like duffle bags, picture frames, and snow globes. Other things can be customized to mark the day, like a jewelry box, pretty hand mirror, or photo album.
Monogrammed gifts are instant keepsakes. A handkerchief embroidered with her name could be tucked away to become her “something old” when she gets married.
“Anything personalized makes them feel special,” DeVito says.
Some brides give their youngest attendants the same thing they give their bridesmaids. They might all get a sweatshirt with “Bridesmaid” or “Flower Girl” inscribed on the back, or the same bejeweled hair accessory or a pink bathrobe.
Couples should bestow gifts at the rehearsal dinner when the others in the bridal party are receiving their gifts, or on the wedding day if the present can keep her busy during all the down time, wedding planners say.
Gifts can be given months beforehand to get little girls excited. There are books that explain the responsibilities of a flower girl and can be filled with mementos. Stuffed animals and dolls all dressed in white can also build enthusiasm.
When 6-year-old Cate Lawrence was given an American Girl doll with a flower-girl ensemble, “she squealed with delight, knowing she was going to play a very special role in my sister's wedding,” said her mother, Colleen Lawrence of Long Valley. “The gift conjured up all sorts of excitement.”
