It’s considered one of the most important finishing touches to a bride’s look, so why do so many women ignore the topic completely? I’m talking about undergarments, more specifically bras.

It’s reported that 70 to 85 percent of women today wear ill-fitting bras. It can seem almost impossible to find the right one, so women have settled for whatever works. But on your wedding day, you want to feel beautiful, confident and sexy, and the right bra can help.

According to Veronica Castro, president and co-founder of Entiise Lingerie in Millburn (973-379-4450; entiiselingerie.com), many brides avoid wearing bras entirely because they don’t want to have more bulk under their heavy gown. “It’s funny—you wear a bra every single day, so why wouldn’t you wear one the day of your wedding,” she says. Though Castro believes that not all brides require undergarments, she recommends that women who are looking for support, waist definition, a smoother silhouette, or anyone wearing a B-cup size or higher should invest in the proper undergarments.

When choosing a bra, Castro recommends going to a professional. “I actually don’t believe in traditional bra fittings. Since each designer cuts differently, I have my clients try on a variety of styles and sizes to find the bra that fits them perfectly.” Castro’s defines the perfect bra as one that doesn’t spill over on the top or the sides, one that doesn’t gape, one that lifts and defines without pinching or falling down, and specifically for brides, one that will last the entire day and night. The perfect bra should also make you look perkier, taller, and even several pounds lighter.

There are a multitude of options available to brides, and you don’t have to spend $300 on a La Perla bra to reap the benefits of a beautiful undergarment. “You should choose a bra based on the style of your wedding dress,” says Castro. For trumpet or drop-waist dresses, Castro suggests a body shaper, which lifts, trims the waist, hips, and thighs, and creates a smooth silhouette. For strapless or halter-top dresses, she recommends a bustier or corset, which defines the waistline, gives support, and has a low back, or a strapless bra, which can be sewn directly into the gown.

For lighter coverage with some lift, Castro suggests stick-on bras. Brides should be prepared to spend anywhere from $35 to $100 at a lingerie shop, which is a small investment for the dramatic results created by wearing the right undergarment. “Women spend hundreds and even thousands of dollars on their wedding gown and accessories,” says Castro, “and I think that to look and feel their absolute best all begins by wearing the perfect undergarment.”
