Whether you’re looking for a place to host your wedding and reception, or simply the latter, a country club may be the perfect location.

Still, many brides share the belief that country clubs are pricey or unavailable to non-members. That’s simply not the case. There are plenty that may be private for golfing, but are open to the public for catering and events. And the prices are competitive if not better than other area locations. “It’s probably one of the best deals you can get, considering everything you get for your money,” says Michael Lusk, general manager and head of catering at Maplewood Country Club in Maplewood (973-762-0215).

With a country club locale you also get the perfect backdrop for your dream wedding or reception. Lush greens and beautiful water features will leave you with some spectacular wedding photos. “We have a natural backdrop offering splendid surroundings for your photographer,” says Arlene Kessler, director of catering at Jumping Brook Country Club in Monmouth County. The 225-acre championship golf course also features a 35,000-square-foot clubhouse with a ballroom offering lavish views of the grounds and accommodating up to 400 guests.

Another benefit is the fact that country clubs have it all in one place. If you don’t have a site to say your “I dos,” most country clubs can accommodate either an outdoor or indoor ceremony, followed by the reception, all at one locale. It eliminates the need to worry about transportation or directions for guests, and keeps things simple. Many brides even opt to do their rehearsal dinner at the country club, as most have on-site restaurants or can do the catering.

But it’s the personalized service that really makes country clubs a top-notch pick. With a country club event you’ll get the service of an experienced staff that club members pay top dollar for. “Not only do you get a beautiful event space, but you get great service, too,” says Lusk. “Most country clubs will treat you like they would a member. My motto is to treat every bride exactly like a member would be treated.”

“We cater to the brides from day one of the planning,” adds Kessler. “And we only do one wedding or reception at a time so that the bride has the entire building. It’s her special day.”
