If you think the only options for your wedding dress are the ubiquitous white or ivory, think again. Until Queen Victoria started a trend by wearing a white lace gown in 1840, brides commonly wore other colors including black, gray, and brown. Happily, today’s brides have more choices than ever before—traditional white and ivory gowns accented with colored sashes, beads, or embroidery, as well as color-washed dresses, or the bold use of blue in the petticoat, as Kat Luettchau wore at her January 9, 2010, wedding at the Meadow Wood Manor in Randolph.

In fact, some of the hottest designers are accentuating the most beautiful details of their gowns with a little unexpected color in just the right places.

Vera Wang, who was among the first to incorporate black accents in her bridal dresses in recent years, is now showing frothy, pale Easter-egg shades of lavender, blush, rose, and silver-gray in her very feminine Spring 2011 designs. Priscilla of Boston’s Platinum Collection presents a blush-pink dress alongside a fun black number, and Oscar de la Renta has created a long ivory gown with a stunning pink silk-taffeta bow, as well as a pale-pink tweed strapless dress with a guipure lace overlay.

Blue is big for springtime as well, and Ines Di Santo’s blue trumpet dress with embellished skirt is red-hot. Douglas Hannant went all-out in designing his whimsical Spring line to include unexpected patterns of baby blue and navy.

The good news for brides is that the new Spring 2011 color palette offers something for everyone. If you want to add just a hint of color, go with a barely there hue from Vera or Priscilla. For the fearless bride, a rainbow of colors awaits you—including classic black from Romona Keveza, Tara Keely, and Priscilla of Boston’s Platinum Collection.

If your taste falls somewhere in the middle, consider a traditional white gown with a contrasting sash in black, gray, lavender, or green.

“You can also add color through accessories such as hair pieces and floral bouquets,” says celebrity stylist David Tutera (davidtuterabyfaviana.com). “Incorporating color adds personality—and adding color and personality makes a memorable event.”

So which hue will you embrace on your wedding day? Choose whatever palette makes you look pretty and feel amazing. The choice is yours, so have fun showing your true colors on your big day!
