After Brennan Reilly dropped to one knee and proposed to Jessica Neupert, she knew who would create their perfect day. An interior designer who studied fine arts in London, Jessica took on the task of planning every detail of their September 13, 2008, wedding. “It definitely became my second job,” says Jessica, 32, who has a namesake design firm in Boston.
Brennan and Jessica were married at Highland Farm, her family’s 184-acre estate in Chester, a home away from home, where the couple likes to swim, hike, and relax. Jessica’s goal was to enhance the natural beauty of the picturesque property and play off the English garden-party theme. The elegant event was the intersection of natural meets classical.
Jessica balanced the formal elements with some unconventional touches: She wore long gloves with her ivory Vera Wang mermaid gown and had a traditional monogram on the menu card and cake. But for a more natural look, she had some overgrown, vegetative arrangements, one filled with grapes, pears, and artichokes. And with a love for the outdoors, the couple exchanged vows in front of a 250-year-old sugar maple tree in a late-afternoon ceremony.
Their 250 guests enjoyed an outdoor cocktail hour and dined and danced under a tent open on the sides to show off the property’s spectacular views. Jessica handled everything, and was working on the finishing touches right up until two hours before the ceremony. Once everything started, Diana Crisci, of Ome Caterers in Whippany, helped keep the event running smoothly. “It was probably the perfect estate farm wedding,” says Crisci. “There wasn’t a detail (Jessica) missed.”
The favors also had a country theme. “There was also a path of luminiaries leading guests to an old rickety cart of a fresh basket of apples on hay barrels along with apple tarts in little white boxes wrapped with blue and white gingham bows,” says Jessica. “Although this was an elegant wedding, we had to give the guests a proper country farm send-off, with sweet comfort food.”
For his part, Brennan, 36, an engineer for Johnson & Johnson, said he was happy to have his bride in charge, knowing their vision would not be misinterpreted. “He’s such an easygoing, free spirit, I think he was happy to let me fulfill my dream wedding,” says Jessica. “The end result was obviously so gratifying.” Despite all of Jessica’s involvement, Brennan, in an English morning suit, was able to surprise her, joining the ten-piece band to play the drums for two songs, and to sing their song, “Ain’t No Sunshine.” After a honeymoon in Tahiti and New Zealand, Jessica and Brennan are now at home in Boston.
