In fact, your options are almost limitless. Today’s albums come in loads of different materials, like textured ostrich or alligator leather. They are made from canvas, metal, wood, silk, fabric, and Lucite. They come in fun colors like orange, red, and purple leather—far beyond traditional black, burgundy, and ivory. There are handmade albums and faux leather, too.
Albums come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, from traditional rectangular to square or panoramic. There are mini albums and larger albums that resemble coffee-table books. You can adorn the outside with a favorite photo stretched across the front and back covers, or have the photo made into a dust jacket. The images of your special day can be put onto thin book-style paper or onto pages made from a heavy board.
“The couple can finally have an individual album—something that matches their taste,” says photographer Christopher Barth, who is based in Flemington (908-303-6816; barthphotography.com). “In a world where you can buy the same thing at the same store across the country, they want something that’s unique.”
Some of the modern options seem slow to catch on, as photographers say black and ivory leather albums remain popular, though most couples are adding a photo on the front. Leather in earth tones is also popular with one photographer; a sleek metal cover was a hot choice with another.
Once you open the album, you have choices, too. You can put multiple photos on a page, use photos of varying sizes, and add graphic-design elements.
“Because of digital photography, we are virtually unlimited on the number of photos we can take, which allows us the freedom to really get creative with wedding albums,” says Janice Celeste, an owner of Celeste Studios in Flanders (866-749-9526; celestestudios.com). “If you have the budget, we can do just about anything.”
For example, she says: “A series of photographs of dancing guests can be placed against a background made from a picture of the bride’s bouquet. A page can be carefully laid out with scores of small pictures that look as if they were thrown onto the page.”
