You’ll search high and low for the perfect dress. And when you find it, you’ll pat yourself on the back and breathe a huge sigh of relief. But don’t relax just yet.

The key to a great look on your wedding day is all in the accessories. Choosing accessories is fun, but can be tricky. It is possible to have too much of a good thing. Think of your dress as a beautiful painting that just needs a few finishing touches to really shine.

The good news is that there are many new ways to complete your look in a unique way that also fits your personal style. Many brides are opting for novel headpiece styles. “For 2007, we are seeing a lot of headbands—beautiful, ornate headbands,” says Lori Dunn of Model Bride in Chatham. “Some of the headbands have ribbons running through them, which tie in the back, and the ribbons hang down the back.” If you are not a headpiece kind of girl, other choices abound, such as jeweled combs and clips or delicate crystal hairpins and barrettes.

Another place where brides are upping the “bling” factor are on their shoes. “Shoes that sparkle are very big for 2007,” explains Dunn. Bridal feet are displaying crystal accents, jeweled pieces, and metallics. Eschewing basic pumps, brides are opting for styles like the peep toe and wedge. Another trend is to add soft color or texture to the ensemble by selecting shoes in blush pink or even snakeskin.

Finally, don’t forget the accessories you can’t see, like your bra, panties, hose, crinoline, and other lingerie. Experts suggest purchasing these pieces early and taking them for a “test drive.” Put them all on and wear them around your house for a few hours. Are they comfortable? Does anything bind, pull, or itch? Pay attention to how the different fabrics work together (think static cling or scratchy crinolines putting runs in your hose). Taking time to take these steps will ensure that you look and feel your best as you walk down the aisle.
