More than ever, brides and grooms are interested in customizing their jewelry to create something unique. It can be as simple as changing a few details on an existing ring to custom-designing the ring from scratch. It all depends on what you want.

“Most of our business is custom,” says David Stone of Nancy and David Fine Jewels in Millburn (973-912-9640; nancyanddavid.com). “Often brides want something different, but they don’t know what. It helps for her to come in with pages ripped out from a magazine so that she can point out what details she likes on each ring. I’ll sketch something up, and we’ll go from there.”

Some brides want to customize their engagement and wedding rings with a stone that’s been passed down as a family heirloom, adds Jay Golde, co-owner of Jay Roberts Jewelers in Marlton (856-596-8600; jrobertsjewelers.com). “We can integrate their stone into the ring however they like,” he says. “We carry in-stock about 500 mountings at all times—some with and some without center stones. But if the customer likes elements on more than one mounting, I can combine them to create something brand new. We can pretty much design anything they want.”

One line that’s become particularly popular for its custom engagement rings and wedding bands is Tacori, says Golde. Every ring is handcrafted under one roof, which gives the company a lot of flexibility in creating something one-of-a-kind. “The majority of our business is special order,” says Michelle Adorjan of Tacori (tacori.com). “You see a ring you like and order it specifically to your taste.”

When it comes to customization, the options are virtually endless. “Brides often ask me: ‘Can you do this?’ and show me their ideas,” says Stone. “I tell them I can create whatever they want.”
