Fifty years ago in San Francisco, founder Chuck Williams of Williams-Sonoma had a brilliant idea.

As he helped brides shop (undoubtedly in white gloves and fashionable hats), he would jot down their favorite items on a little tablet. When their friends and families chose wedding gifts, he would cross items off his list. Beyond fine china and crystal, Williams encouraged brides to include linens, appliances, and such to fully outfit their kitchens.

Today’s brides can celebrate the registry’s fiftieth birthday by visiting williams-sonoma.com or their neighborhood Williams-Sonoma. You’re cordially invited for a private tour on “Store Is Yours” Sundays—or to host a bridal shower/cooking class after hours.

Thank you, Mr. Williams! That's funny, I just added a bunch of Williams-Sonoma items to my online MyRegistry.com wish list. Looks like registries have come a long way in the past 50 years :)
