For Lisa Ninan of Elmont, New York, and Chuck Flores of Princeton, a chance meeting at a Kaplan review class changed their lives. “I saw his thousand-watt smile and thought he was really cute,” says Lisa. The couple’s first official date a month later saw them strolling down Seventh Avenue—all the way from 56th Street to Broome Street. “I could not believe that I had just walked for hours in the freezing cold, which I hate,” she adds. Soon after, Lisa returned to Bangalore, India, to complete her medical internship. After her return to the States, the couple spent another year dating and working through issues brought up by their parents—Chuck is Filipino and Lisa is Indian. After lots of input from their large families, Lisa and Chuck set the date—May 5, 2007.
The wedding began with a ceremony at the Princeton Alliance Church in Plainsboro. The couple then entertained 489 guests at the Brearley Historical House in Lawrenceville.
In a tent decked out in a magenta-and-lime color scheme, complete with large multi-hued lanterns and stars, friends and family from Connecticut, Florida, New York, and the Philippines were treated to a cocktail hour with casino tables and kabuls, which were separate lounge areas housed under mini tents with sofas, lounge chairs, and Indian elephants placed on either side of the dance floor. Lavish floral arrangements featured large cymbidium orchids in lime and magenta, tulips, peonies, hot princess roses, gloriosa lilies, kermit mums, and dendrobiums.
The day’s highlights included a trolley to transport the wedding party; a bluegrass band that played assorted wild and wacky instruments during the cocktail hour; Manhattan City Music, an internationally acclaimed band and deejay whose selections included rousing Bollywood fare along with jazz and hip-hop with five dance instructors; the bridal party being introduced to the Chicago Bulls theme song (Chuck is a basketball enthusiast); Indian-inspired decorations; laser-light shows; a sit-down meal featuring Chilean sea bass, filet mignon, herb-encrusted chicken, and vegetarian fare; and copper chocolate fondue pots at each table with trays of fruit, marshmallows, and pound cake for dipping, in addition to a strawberry-shortcake-filled wedding cake.
The couple, who honeymooned on the Amalfi Coast, Capri, and Tuscany, will be moving to back to New Jersey after Chuck completes his fellowship in sports medicine in Ohio.
